Fostering a Culture of Quality Research at a Young Institution: Insights from Kyambogo University

Abstract

The study explored the trends and quality of research output of academic staff at Kyambogo University, Uganda for the period 2003 to 2020. Using desk research content analysis, the findings showed 199 (47%) out of 425 staff had published 440 articles of which 266 (60%) were credible. The three most productive Faculties were: Science 110, Education, 106, and Arts and Social Sciences with 90 publications. The most prolific author produced 35 articles 6 of which were the first author. This productivity was attributed to factors commended for leveraging the identified niche in science, education, and humanities. The study is instrumental in advancing strategies that could foster a culture of quality research through deliberate policy actions.

Edward Mukiibi, Senior Librarian, Kyambogo University, P.O. Box 1, Kyambogo, Uganda

Edward Mukiibi is a Senior Librarian and Head of Barclays’ Library at Kyambogo University. This year marks 27 years of service as a Librarian. He has served in management positions at different institution libraries: Public, School, Corporate, and Academic. He studied at Makerere University for a bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science (1996) and, Master's in Information Science (2004) and currently pursuing a PhD in Information Science. Interests include; Innovations in library service delivery, Library Management, Information Access, and Research Data Management.

Dr Robert Stalone Buwule, Senior Assistant Librarian, Kyambogo University, Kyambogo, Uganda

Dr. Robert Stalone Buwule  was a Senior Assistant Librarian at Kyambogo University heading the Library ICT section until December 2022.  He holds a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa. He is on the executive committee of the AISSIST African Chapter and AISSIST Fellow 2022. He has worked as a consultant on user-friendly libraries, database searching, data mining, ease of information access, knowledge management, and Research and Development projects. Dr. Buwule is a published author of several peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers. His interests and research work relate to; ICT4D, management of information and information institutions, Data literacy, Easing Information Access, Disability Information Services, Research and innovation Information Services, and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Eliz Nassali State, University Librarian, Kyambogo University, Kyambogo, Uganda

Dr. Eliz Nassali State is the University Librarian at Kyambogo University. She holds a Ph.D. in Information science from Makerere University. She is a published author of several peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. She has examined Masters and PhD students’ manuscripts. Her interests are in technical library services, management, research, mentorship, and capacity development for effective and efficient library service delivery. She is a member of ALA and many other local professional associations.
