Developing Managerial Skills for College Library Staff with Special Reference to Affiliated Colleges under Mizoram University

Abstract

The paper highlights the areas of library and information professionals need to be updated to cope up with the digital environment. Its purpose is to assess the various managerial skills of library professionals of Mizoram, and to determine the various areas which need special training and orientation. The study includes the library professionals of 36 colleges and institutes which are affiliated to Mizoram University. Questionnaires were distributed to the library professionals and inferences were drawn based on the responses received. 50 library professionals have responded which gives the response rate of 92.6%. The present study found out that the majority of the library professionals under investigation have strong managerial abilities in a variety of domains. Majority of the respondents have excellent skill in most of the areas of library management such as 'motivating people', 'positive reaction to failure ','managing conflict' and 'vision and initiative'. The respondents also have a high level of teamwork ability (76%) which is crucial to the library's success. According to the current survey, the most essential managerial trait among library professionals is "time management," which demands further training and orientation. The study examines the managerial abilities required of library and information professionals and the findings will help them understand their current status in the field of library management which will help in improving their skills in offering high-quality library services to the users.
